My fifth book for the Grapevine challenge is Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen. It's a magical book that had me hooked from the beginning to the end.It is set in the small town of Bascom, North Carolina. Claire Waverly, a 34-year-old caterer, lives alone in the family house, taling comfort in her routine and in her job: she takes plants and flowers from her garden to make dishes with special characteristics that affect the eater.
All Waverly women have a special gift, unique to themselves, and for this they are considered different. But not all of them appreciate it: Claire's mother ran from it, as did her sister Sidney. Now, Sidney has returned to the family home with her little daughter Bay in tow, running from an abusive relationship.
The sisters slowly grow closer and learn to love each other--which brings new possibilities. Sidney must learn to appreciate her own special brand of magic, while Claire needs to abandon her fears that things in her life might not be permanent.
This was an enchanting book--full of magical realism. The main theme is family legacy--the idea that all descendents from a family share unique characteristics. Of course, love, magic and family ties are also prominent themes. It all flows very nicely up to the happy ending.
I loved this book. It is light reading, for those who enjoy romance, and magic, and happy stories.
