Yesterday I was feeling bored, so I went and joined a new theme for posts: Weekly Geeks! It was invented by Dewey at The Hidden Side of the Leaf. Follow the link so that you can see how it works, and decide that maybe you want to join too!The theme for this week comes from Samantha, who suggests that we write about fond memeories of childhood books. Well, here are five of my favourite books as a child--I expect some will be popular between other "Weekly Geeks"!
- Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. I remember our teacher would read this book aloud to the class, a chapter a week, and we were all total fans of Charlie, cheering for him when he found the Golden Ticket, and hating the other, spoiled children who got to visit the Factory. And when I arrived home after such readings, I always felt a longing for chocolate. I was maybe nine at the time, and loved, loved, loved that book.
- At age ten, my favourite book was Matilda by Roald Dahl. This one I read myself, and liked it very much. It was about a girl with a love for reading, like myself, and who even had superpowers, how cool! But the thing I loved the most about Matilda is that at such a young age she could always look out for herself.
- Another favourite book of mine was Ascolta il mio cuore, a book by the popular Italian author Bianca Pitzorno. This book is set in Sardinia in the 1950s. It deals with the adventures of three girls, who over the course of a school year fight against their teacher, who is unfair towards poor pupils and treats rich schoolgirls better. A truly memorable book.
- When I was a bit loder, I fell in love with Little Women, by Louisa M. Alcott. I've lost count of how many times I've read that book. My favourite caharacter was Jo because of her recklessness and writing abilities, but I also wanted to be like Meg, who got married and had twins.
- At 12 or so, my favourite book was another by Alcott, The Old-Fashioned Girl. Polly, of course, was my favourite character and I swiftly paired her off with Tom Shaw. I think Tom was the first fictional character with whom I've fallen in love.
